8 First Team NCAC; Moore PLayer of the Year; Abbott Coach of the Year
BYNICK CAMMUSO TIMES WEST VIRGINIAN
FAIRMONT — Fairmont Senior ruled the North Central Athletic Conference in 2009, going through its league schedule unbeaten en route to a 9-1 regular season. It’s only fitting that the squad displayed the same kind of dominance when the NCAC released its all-conference football teams Saturday.
The Polar Bears had a league-best eight players make first team, including quarterback Logan Moore, who was named Player of the Year. In addition, J.L. Abbott was selected as Coach of the Year while linebacker Remington Skarzinski shared defensive co-captain honors with University’s Steven Bohon.
As a senior this past season, Moore completed 162 of 291 passes for 2,568 yards, 31 touchdowns and just eight interceptions. The Kennedy Award candidate added 576 rushing yards and 11 scores on 107 attempts.
Abbott, meanwhile, led the Polar Bears to a 10-2 season and a spot in the Class AAA quarterfinals. Along the way, Fairmont Senior won the NCAC title and posted a rare sweep over traditional conference powers University and Morgantown.
Skarzinski, a Huff Award candidate, finished with a team-best 164 tackles (109 solo, 55 assists), 11 tackles for loss, four sacks and two interceptions.
Aaron Fetty, another first-team pick, also stood out. He finished with a league-high 66 catches, 1,003 yards and 13 touchdowns, in the process becoming the first receiver in school history to break the 1,000-yard plateau in a single season.
Moore’s other top targets, Ryan Sevier (30 catches, 750 yards, 7 TD) and Marcus Jacquez (25 catches, 372 yards, 7 TD), earned first-team honors. Do-everything receiver/ defensive back/punter Trevor Malnick, center Christian Cummings and linebacker Alex Joseph also made the first team.
