Girls Rally From Down 12 to Top Preston
Fairmont Senior’s girls’ basketball team got back on the winning track Tuesday night with a North Central Athletic Conference win over Preston.
The Polar Bears trailed by 12 points heading into the fourth and final frame rallied to beat the Knights, 55-49.
“We never quit,” Fairmont Senior head coach Ashley Reed said. “We knew we could win this game and we fought back and got out of there with a win.”
The 12-point deficit wasn’t the biggest faced by the Bears in the game, they trailed by 16 in the third.
“I called a time out after we got down 16 and told the girls they needed to step up because the game wasn’t over,” Reed said. “They responded and we picked up the victory.”
Aryssa Hudson led the Polar Bears with 18 points and Kaitlinn O’Neal chipped in 15. “Aryssa probably had the best game of her 3-year career
here at Fairmont Senior,” Reed said. “An Kaitlinn really stepped up her game. She scored 12 of her 15 in the fourth quarter alone.”
The Polar Bears secured the victory with defense, much the way East did the week before against the Knights.
Focusing on Preston’s Mackenzie Martin and Michelle Groves the Bears were able to force the other Preston players to beat them.
“We knew defense was going to be key,” Reed said. “We knew coming in 22 (Groves) and Martin were going to be handful and I think we did a nice job on them.
Martin had 14 to lead the Knights in the game.
The Polar Bears, now 6-4 on the season and 3-2 in the North Central Athletic Conference) will be off until Saturday when they host the Nicholas County Grizzlies. Nicholas won the first meeting of the two teams this season in Summersville, 48-34.
