Winning Ugly
BYNICK CAMMUSO TIMES WEST VIRGINIAN
RACHEL — While her team was much improved, even state-ranked heading into Thursday’s matchup at rival North Marion, Fairmont Senior coach Ashley Reed knew that facing the Huskies was a task unlike any other this season.
“To play with North Marion, you have to play an almost perfect game,” she said.
On this night, though, “perfect” never entered the equation. Not for poor-shooting Fairmont Senior, nor the homestanding Huskies, who nabbed a less-than-pretty 89-48 victory.
How ugly was it?
Well, consider these numbers: • Both teams combined to take 72 free throws • Of North’s 40 free throw tries, the team barely made half (21) • Fairmont Senior fared better at the line, but connected on just four first-half shots The Polar Bears were competitive early, trailing 13-8 after one period, but the game got away from them in the second as the team hit 1 of 13 shots.
“I don’t think we could have thrown the ball in the ocean,” Reed said. “That was probably our worst shooting night of the year, and when you’re playing the No. 1 team in the state and you miss that many shots, it’s going to be detrimental.
“I thought we played hard, but I didn’t think we played smart. They fought but right now we’re not in the same class as North Marion, and I really don’t think any team in the state of West Virginia is. We’ve come a long way, but we have a long way to go.”
While North Marion coach Mike Parrish was pleased with his team’s ability to break away — Hailey Garrett scored six of her 13 points in the final two minutes of the first half and the Huskies led 39-18 at the break — he wasn’t exactly pleased with the evening’s officiating.
North senior guard Jessica Parsons suffered a knee injury on a hard third-quarter foul — she didn’t return — and Parrish was given a technical for arguing the call. Later, as the teams were seemingly trading trips to the foul line, Fairmont Senior’s Jenai Stubbs was called for an intentional foul along the left sideline.
“It got a little out of hand,” Parrish said. “It’s not basketball out there ... it’s a roughhouse. Everyone who was here saw what happened and saw how the game was called.
“You don’t like playing games like that. You hope to get it over and not get anyone hurt.”
Added Reed: “It was just ugly.”
The Huskies did enough late to stretch the lead, hitting six 3- pointers in the third quarter alone. They finished with 11 as a team.
In all, four North (9-1, 5-0 NCAC) players hit double figures. Kaitlyn Antolock had a game-best 17 points, while Kelsi Wright and Courtney Swiger had 15 each. Garrett added 13.
Fairmont Senior (5-3, 2-2) was led by Ayrssa Hudson’s 14 points.
North visits East Fairmont Tuesday, while Fairmont Senior plays at Bridgeport Saturday.
