Polar Bear girls win another NCAC swim title

BUCKHANNON — Fairmont Senior’s girls’ swim team continued its recent run of winning on Saturday, rolling to a fifth straight title in the North Central Athletic Conference Championships at West Virginia Wesleyan College.
The Polar Bears tallied 142.5 team points, well ahead of runner- up Buckhannon-Upshur (93) and third-place Elkins (87). East Fairmont was sixth (35) and North Marion eighth (8).
In the boys standings, Buckhannon (132) took the title and was followed by Morgantown (105), University (69). Fairmont Senior (64) was fourth despite just five athletes competing, while East was seventh (27) and North eighth (9).
The Polar Bear girls scored in every event. They won two events, as Brionna Minney took the 100 fly (1:09.28) and the team of Sarah Cover, Erica Amos, Zela Wyrosdick and Chelsea Clark nabbed the title in the 400 free relay (4:08.16).
Minney also took first in the 100 fly (1:09.28) and second in the 50 free (27.15). Wyrosdick, meanwhile, was second in the 500 free (5:58.38) and third in the 200 free (2:15.30).
Alexandrea Murray added a second-place finish in the 100 breaststroke (1:19.87), Autumn Hansen was second in the 100 backstroke (1:10.48), Chelsea Clark was third in the 50 (27.43) and 100 free (1:00.21), Erica Amos was third in the 100 backstroke (1:11.52) and Camille Leon was third in the 100 fly (1:17.38).
On the boys side, Fairmont Senior's Andrew Bonasso was second in the 50 free (23.21) and 100 free (51.06). Teammate Alex Petry added a third-place time in the 100 backstroke (1:02.87).
East Fairmont's Grant Chapman had two top ten finishes, placing second in the 200 IM (2:24.28) and third in the 100 fly (1:02.97).
There was a three way tie for both the boys and girls swimmer of the Year award. The girls awards went to Elkins' Delaney Johnson, Morgantown's Katie Murto and Buckhannon's Courtney Miller. On the boys side, Buckhannon's Tim Squires and the Morgantown duo of Peter Murto and Scott Fetsko shared the honors.
Fairmont Senior's Steve Sandor was named girls coach of the year, while Buckhannon's Michael Roessing took the boys honor.
