Bears Hold Off Huskies, 57-49
BYMIKE BOWEN TIMES WEST VIRGINIAN
FAIRMONT — Fairmont Senior head coach David Retton wasn’t happy with the way his team played Wednesday against rival North Marion.
But he was happy with the result — a 57-49 Polar Bear win over the Huskies.
“It’s a win; that’s about all we can say about that game,” Retton said. “Overall, our team effort, our intensity, wasn’t good. Our energy wasn’t good. I don’t care who the opponent is, what their record is, we have to go out and get our game in every night, and I don’t think we did tonight.”
The two teams played fairly even through the first half with Fairmont Senior stretching its lead to 11 at one point in the second quarter before North brought it back down to eight at halftime, 28-20.
The Huskies worked inside with Tyler Thorne and Shawn McCoy, while Fairmont Senior’s offensive rebounding and perimeter shooting helped the Polar Bears keep ahead.
“The difference in the game is the second-chance opportunities,” North Marion head coach Chris Freeman said. “Our effort was there. I can live with the effort we gave tonight. But when you’re playing against a top 10 team, you have to execute all the time.”
In the second half the Polar Bears pushed their lead to a game-high 14 before a North 8-0 run cut it to six. But Travon Horton answered with a 3-pointer and a free throw to make the score 41-31 heading into the fourth in favor of FSHS.
“They were giving us some perimeter shots,” Retton said. “And a lot of them were not going down. As a team we have to make more adjustments and find other ways to score those points then.”
Troy Shuck led the Huskies with 15 points. Tyler Thorne had nine points and Shawn McCoy finished with eight.
Ty Garrison paced the Bears with 19 points.
“I know Garrison had 19 points, but I think we did a nice job on him. When he takes the majority of the shots, he’s going to score the points,” Freeman said. “Troy Shuck had another nice game for us, and Tyler and Shawn had good games around the basket.”
Andrew Marra added 10 for FSHS, Ryan Sevier nine and Horton eight.
“I thought Travon Horton came in and gave us some great minutes,” Retton said. “Andrew Marra got some big rebounds and hit some shots. I thought our energy picked up in the second half, and I thought it would lead to us extending the lead. Instead we were fighting for our lives.”
The Polar Bears (11-2, 6-1 in the North Central Athletic Conference) will be back in action on Friday when they host Elkins.
North Marion (7-8, 2-6 in the NCAC) will be on the road to take on East Fairmont on Feb. 10.
