Huskies second, Bees fourth at wrestling regional
HEDGESVILLE — North Marion had a solid showing at Saturday’s Region II wrestling tournament, with three champions and a total of nine wrestlers advancing to this week’s state meet.
The Huskies, ranked 10th in the state in Class AAA, finished second in the team standings. Hedgesville took the team title, while Martinsburg was third and East Fairmont fourth.
“Not bad,” North coach Dave Tennant said of the team result. “We would’ve liked to have a couple more, though.”
The Huskies had three champs in Brooks Russell (125 pounds), Ryan Hinerman (130) and Tyler Tennant (135). The latter two each nabbed his second straight regional championship.
Trevor Fancher (103), Chad Efaw (140) and Josh Bombard (145) each placed second, but managed to punch their ticket to states. North’s other state qualifiers included Alex Martinoisi (119), Zach Ayers (189) and Tyler Philips (285).
East, meanwhile, had seven qualify for states.
Hunter Wood won a third regional title, the latest at 119 pounds.
Mike Holyfield was a runner- up at 160, Brandon Spicer a runner-up at 171 and Zac Townsend a runner-up at 285. Anthony Rundle placed third at 130, while Layne Michael was fourth at 112 and Jesse Roman was fourth at 145.
“We only had 10 boys in the lineup,” East coach John Geary said. “We’re happy with that.”
